All Maltese MEPs present for the vote in the European Parliament today on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, which aims to lower the energy consumption of buildings through renovations and achieve a fully climate-neutral building stock by 2050, voted….wait for it…AGAINST. The anti-people and planet EPP of which PN is a member party is notoriously against the social-ecological transition because it defends powerful interests. On the other hand the Maltese Labour MEPs have to try and delay any transition because the Labour government in Malta does not want to ruffle the feathers of speculators and contractors and regulate the industry properly, forcing them to provide VALUE FOR MONEY and properly insulated homes.
A serious government would have started preparing for this transition twenty years ago. Instead we had a government which in 2006 opened the floodgates to rampant low-quality construction, followed by another government in 2013 whcih continued the building frenzy, refusing to reverse the 2006 disaster and instead incentivising further speculation.
